Physics - Grade 12

☰ Program Description

The Grade 12 Physics course at Apex Community Collegiate helps students understand the physical laws and mathematical relationships that explain motion, forces, energy, fields, waves, and other natural phenomena. It encourages students to move beyond memorizing scientific facts and develop the ability to apply physical principles to unfamiliar problems.

Students can investigate how objects move, how energy is transferred, how forces interact, and how electric and magnetic fields influence matter. Mathematical models, graphs, diagrams, and scientific calculations can help students describe these relationships and make predictions about physical systems.

The course also emphasizes experimental investigation, data interpretation, and evidence-based reasoning. Through practical activities and problem-solving exercises, students can develop precision, analytical thinking, and scientific communication skills. These foundations can be useful for further education in engineering, physics, computer engineering, technology, and other science-related fields.

Students may engage in guided lessons, mathematical problem-solving, demonstrations, laboratory experiments, computer-based simulations, and collaborative investigations. Graphs, diagrams, and practical examples can help students connect theoretical models with physical events.

Students can also practise explaining their methods, checking the reasonableness of their answers, and interpreting evidence rather than relying solely on memorized formulas.

By the end of the course, students should be able to:

  • Describe motion and solve problems involving displacement, velocity, acceleration, and forces.

  • Apply Newton’s laws to analyse interactions and predict changes in motion.

  • Explain the conservation and transfer of energy and analyse momentum-related situations.

  • Use field models to describe gravitational, electric, and magnetic interactions.

  • Explain important wave properties and apply them to sound and light phenomena.

  • Apply appropriate equations, diagrams, and units to quantitative physics problems.

  • Design investigations, interpret measurements, and evaluate experimental evidence.

  • Communicate scientific conclusions using mathematical reasoning and appropriate terminology.

Assessment and Evaluation

Possible assessment methods include numerical problem sets, laboratory reports, experimental investigations, quizzes, tests, research assignments, and examinations. Students may be evaluated on conceptual understanding, mathematical accuracy, experimental skills, and the ability to explain scientific reasoning.

The school’s approved assessment policy should determine the final assessment methods and weighting.

Future Academic Pathways

Grade 12 Physics may support preparation for engineering, physics, astronomy, robotics, computer engineering, and technology-related programs. Some architecture, mathematics, and applied-science programs may also require or recommend physics. Students should check individual admission requirements.
