Science - Grade 10
- Updated on May 5, 2026
☰ Program Description
The Grade 10 Science course introduces students to fundamental scientific concepts and encourages them to explore the natural world through observation, investigation, experimentation, and critical thinking. Students develop an understanding of how scientific principles explain everyday phenomena and how science influences technology, the environment, and modern society.
Through the study of biology, chemistry, physics, and Earth and environmental science, students explore living organisms, chemical substances, energy, motion, and natural processes. They learn to ask scientific questions, develop hypotheses, collect and interpret data, and use evidence to support conclusions.
At Apex Community Collegiate, the course can encourage students to connect scientific knowledge with real-world situations through guided investigations, laboratory activities, research assignments, and collaborative projects. Students also develop an awareness of laboratory safety, responsible resource use, and the importance of evaluating scientific information.
The Grade 10 Science program provides a foundation for further high school science courses and helps students build the analytical, investigative, and problem-solving skills needed for future academic studies.
Teaching and Learning Approach
The course can combine guided instruction, practical activities, independent study, and collaborative learning to help students understand scientific concepts and apply them in different situations.
Students may participate in:
- Guided lessons: Explore scientific concepts through explanations, diagrams, demonstrations, and examples.
- Laboratory investigations: Observe scientific processes, conduct experiments, and record results under appropriate supervision.
- Research activities: Investigate scientific questions using reliable sources and relevant evidence.
- Data interpretation: Analyse experimental results, charts, graphs, and other scientific information.
- Group projects: Collaborate on investigations and communicate findings to classmates.
- Scientific discussions: Examine environmental and technological issues and consider evidence-based explanations.
This approach helps students connect scientific theory with practical experience while developing curiosity, accuracy, and independent thinking.
◉ Learning Objectives
By the end of the course, students should be able to demonstrate progress in the following areas:
Scientific Knowledge and Understanding
Explain key scientific concepts and describe how biological, chemical, physical, and environmental processes relate to the natural world.
Experimental and Laboratory Skills
Follow laboratory safety procedures, use scientific equipment appropriately, carry out investigations, and record observations accurately.
Data Analysis and Interpretation
Organize experimental results, interpret tables and graphs, identify patterns, and use scientific evidence to support conclusions.
Critical Thinking and Problem-Solving
Ask relevant scientific questions, evaluate possible explanations, recognize limitations in investigations, and apply logical reasoning to scientific problems.
Scientific Communication
Explain scientific ideas clearly through written reports, labelled diagrams, presentations, and discussions, using appropriate scientific terminology.
Environmental Awareness
Explain connections between scientific processes and environmental issues, and evaluate ways scientific knowledge can support responsible decisions.
