Chemistry- Grade 11

☰ Program Description

Grade 11 Chemistry introduces students to the study of matter, its properties, and the changes it undergoes. It helps students understand the scientific principles behind the materials, substances, and chemical processes they encounter in everyday life.

Through chemistry, students explore how substances are described, how chemical changes occur, and how scientific models help explain the behaviour of matter. The course encourages students to think logically, interpret scientific information, and develop a better understanding of the role chemistry plays in the world around them.

At Apex Community Collegiate, Grade 11 Chemistry provides an opportunity for students to build their scientific knowledge and develop analytical and problem-solving skills. It can also help prepare students for further learning in chemistry, health sciences, engineering, environmental science, and other science-related fields.

Students may learn through guided instruction, demonstrations, scientific discussions, problem-solving exercises, and practical investigations where available.

Learning activities may include interpreting chemical diagrams, working through calculations, examining examples of chemical changes, researching applications of chemistry, and discussing the safe and responsible use of chemical substances.

Any laboratory activities will follow the school’s approved procedures and safety requirements.

The course aims to help students develop an introductory understanding of chemistry. Depending on the finalized curriculum, students may learn to:

  • Describe matter and identify differences in the properties of substances.
  • Explain basic chemical concepts using appropriate scientific terminology.
  • Interpret chemical symbols, formulas, diagrams, and other representations.
  • Understand how chemical changes can be observed and described.
  • Apply mathematical and logical reasoning to appropriate chemistry problems.
  • Interpret scientific information and explain conclusions using evidence.
  • Recognize the relevance of chemistry in everyday life and modern industries.
