English - Grade 12

☰ Program Description

The Grade 12 English course at Apex Community Collegiate is designed to develop students’ abilities to read critically, write effectively, communicate clearly, and analyse complex ideas. As students prepare for university, college, and other post-secondary opportunities, the course encourages them to engage with a variety of literary works, informational texts, and media messages while developing a deeper understanding of language and communication.

Students can explore how authors use language, structure, imagery, symbolism, and different literary techniques to communicate meaning. They can also examine how texts reflect individual experiences, cultural perspectives, historical contexts, and contemporary issues. Through analytical essays, research assignments, discussions, and presentations, students can learn to organize their thoughts, support their arguments with evidence, and communicate their ideas to different audiences.

The course also emphasizes independent learning, research skills, and critical thinking. Students can develop strategies for evaluating information, identifying bias, distinguishing facts from opinions, and constructing well-supported arguments. These skills are valuable not only for academic writing but also for making informed decisions and communicating professionally in everyday life.

Learning may combine guided reading, teacher-led discussions, independent literary analysis, writing workshops, collaborative activities, and research projects. Students can receive feedback on their writing and use it to strengthen their arguments, organization, and language skills.

Presentations, structured debates, and peer-review activities may provide opportunities to communicate ideas, consider alternative viewpoints, and develop confidence. Independent reading and writing assignments can also encourage students to take greater responsibility for their academic progress.

By the end of the course, students should be able to:

  • Analyse literary and informational texts by examining themes, structure, language, and the author’s purpose.

  • Interpret complex ideas and support their interpretations with relevant textual evidence.

  • Develop well-organized essays with clear arguments, logical progression, and appropriate academic language.

  • Conduct research using credible sources and incorporate information ethically into written work.

  • Evaluate arguments, identify bias, and assess how media messages influence audiences.

  • Communicate ideas effectively through discussions, presentations, and formal writing.

  • Revise and edit their work to improve clarity, accuracy, organization, and style.

  • Apply independent learning and critical-thinking strategies to academic and real-world situations.
