French - Grade 12

☰ Program Description

The Grade 12 French course at Apex Community Collegiate is designed to help students strengthen their French language proficiency and communicate effectively in a variety of academic, social, and professional contexts. Building on their previous French studies, students can develop more advanced vocabulary, improve grammatical accuracy, and become more confident in expressing ideas through speaking, writing, listening, and reading.

Students can explore French-language literature, articles, media, and other authentic materials to understand how language communicates meaning across different situations. They can practise expressing opinions, explaining viewpoints, discussing social issues, and presenting information in an organized manner. The course may also introduce students to different Francophone communities, cultural traditions, and contemporary issues.

By combining language development with cultural exploration, the course can help students become more independent language learners. French proficiency can be useful for further education, international communication, travel, and career opportunities in education, business, tourism, public service, and other fields.

Learning may combine guided language instruction, conversation practice, listening exercises, reading activities, writing workshops, presentations, and cultural research projects.

Students can participate in pair and group activities to practise communicating in French. Feedback on speaking and writing can help them improve accuracy, expand vocabulary, and develop greater confidence. Independent reading and listening activities may also encourage regular exposure to the language.

By the end of the course, students should be able to:

  • Communicate ideas, experiences, and opinions in spoken French with greater fluency and confidence.

  • Understand main ideas and supporting details in a range of French-language texts.

  • Apply appropriate grammar, vocabulary, and sentence structures in different contexts.

  • Write organized and coherent texts for academic, personal, and practical purposes.

  • Interpret spoken French and respond appropriately to questions and discussions.

  • Deliver presentations and participate in conversations using suitable language and communication strategies.

  • Demonstrate an understanding of Francophone communities, cultural perspectives, and contemporary issues.

  • Use independent learning strategies to improve pronunciation, comprehension, vocabulary, and grammatical accuracy.

Assessment and Evaluation

Students may demonstrate their progress through oral conversations, presentations, listening exercises, reading comprehension tasks, written assignments, vocabulary activities, projects, and examinations.
